MISC:Djibouti is a vast wasteland; 89% of the land is desert with a
negligible amount of arable land. It, however, does have important
geothermal resources and a strategic location near the world's busiest
shipping lanes, close to Arabian oilfields. Djibouti imports almost all
its domestically needed goods-foods, machinery, and transport
equipment. In 1986 Djibouti spent 23% of its central government budget
on its military. It became independent 27 June, 1977. Member of UN
since 1977.
